In 1975, Jack McLaughlin graduated from the University of Virginia with a commission as Second Lieutenant, Adjutant General’s Corps in the United States Army. Deployment would follow, to Tong du chon-ni, Korea, where he served on the division staff. Ultimately, Jack would spend five years on active duty with the Army, holding several positions including Command and Leadership Branch instructor before promotion to Captain. In 1980, he separated from active duty and joined the 58th Infantry Brigade (Separate), Maryland Army National Guard.
After completion of law school in 1985, Jack served as a trial attorney in the United States Department of Justice. Upon entering private practice, he joined Young, Conaway, Stargatt & Taylor as special counsel in the bankruptcy department. Today, Jack is partner in the law firm of Ciardi Ciardi & Astin. He practices primarily in the area of commercial litigation and bankruptcy. An experienced litigator, Jack holds several thousand hours’ experience in and outside of the courtroom; arguing, presenting, and negotiating on behalf of individual and corporate clients.
A recipient of various appointments, awards, commendations and degrees, Jack received the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Maryland Commendation Medal with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Virginia Commendation Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Order of the Arrow and the Director’s Award for Excellence in Legal Advocacy. Board appointments include the Military Assistance Project and the St. Patrick’s Society. He holds an M.S. from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1979 and a J.D. from Widener University School of Law, cum laude.
Jack is a longstanding member of the mediation panel of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware and has participated in countless mediations as both litigant and mediator. He offers a unique set of tools and experiences as a third-party mediator. Jack is able to apply this experience in a cost effective manner to lead litigants confidently towards a balanced and fair resolution.
